Yesterday FB memories reminded me that two years ago (11/5/19) I'd stopped in SLO on my way home from Los Angeles. Happy hour at Giuseppe's Italian Restaurant in downtown was the right choice for an early dinner stop before continuing my drive. I'd often heard that the Pismo Beach original is the better of the two locations, but I'd been to neither of them before. Dropping in for an alcohol-less happy hour was a good choice for an early meal before continuing my drive north. I just checked and am pleased to see that Giuseppe's is still in business and seems to have thrived during the pandemic. Makes sense, as that festive outdoor patio that I enjoyed would be an asset during these times. I recall that it was wildly popular, and that I almost didn't get a seat even early on.

While happy hour is no longer mentioned on the website, the dishes I enjoyed are still on the regular dinner menu but at higher prices than stated here. I liked the complimentary house-baked bread, especially when slathered with the garlicky spread.

Steamed mussels and local clams, $11, were sweet and tender, and almost a meal unto itself with some of the bread. Eggplant Parmigiana, $7, oozed with cheese and a full-bodied tomato sauce for mopping up with more of that bread. Guess I ate too much bread this time. I actually took most of the eggplant home as a leftover, knowing that it would reheat well. The wood-fired Popeye pizza, $11, had good ingredients (spinach, burrata, pesto, parmesan), but too much of a good thing weighed down the pie and made it wet and soupy. I enjoyed it far more the next day when I could crisp and dry out the thin crust reheating it in a skillet.
