Hanoi Chicken Noodle opened in San Leandro in July 2017. I had a chance to try it a few weeks ago after an appointment nearby.

I made sure to arrive before noon, as I'd heard about long lines at lunch time. Good thing I did, as the parking lot of this shopping center isn't big enough for the traffic this restaurant creates. A blown-up menu with photos posted by the door lets helps to figure out what you want by the time you make it to the cashier. The more detailed menu presented inside is bilingual English and Chinese.

For me, #2 Bone-in chicken noodle soup, $8.99, ordered with half thin egg noodles and half fresh rice noodles. I paid at the counter, got a number, and the food was brought to my table quite quickly. Water and tea were self-serve and a tray of condiments and utensils was on each table.

The chicken had the deeper taste and firmer texture of free-range yellow feather chicken. On a rare side, the meat was slightly chewy. The skin could be more taut yet was well-rendered of fat. The pieces were hacked on the large side, so a little harder to manipulate in the mouth to free from the bones. The soup stock was concentrated a a bit too salty, but flavored the noodles well. The bowl was garnished with diced red onion, crispy shallots, scallions and cilantro. A portion of ginger-scallion dipping sauce accompanied the chicken. There was no thick, sweet soy sauce on the condiment tray.

For the price in a comfortable setting, I thought this was a bargain. I'd happily return when I'm in the neighborhood again.
