For years Hamakawa (207-9 Central Ave, LA) was the spot late night to get reasonably priced pretty damn good sushi till midnight. Went there last night and the place had changed...for the worse. new ownership, half priced sushi (usually not the best sign, not to be a snob, it'll do in a pinch, but...) And while I like plasma screens with continuous loop of Janet Jackson videos and last weekend's Mavericks-Suns game as much as the next guy (Actually maybe more!) It did little to enhance my sushi eating experience.
Is Hamakawa dead and gone? Has it moved into a better space or morphed into something else? Let's put it this way, you may get a 3.00 spicy tuna roll at this new joint, and God bless 'em, but the days of the negitoro hand roll and ankimo sashimi, long gone. If anyone has any info on Hamakawa I'm all ears!
