For the past five years I've thrown a holiday cocktail party and the main proteins have been beef tenderloin and shrimp. However, a couple people commented that it was tough to eat the tenderloin and I was thinking maybe ham would be a better choice. I thought maybe I could serve it with a few different mustards and cornichon along with potato rolls. I have never served ham before (seriously - we were not ham people growing up and I have never made ham). So I have a couple questions about it ...
If I don't serve a spiral ham, will guests carve their own? Or will I just end up with a nibbled-on ham at the end of the party? The reason I ask is because the consensus seems to be that spiral ham is not that great and it's way better quality if you just get a whole ham and carve it yourself.
If I do serve a spiral ham, any recommendations on the best brand or best way to cook it so it comes out moist?
Could I cook the ham beforehand, carve it, and serve it cold or at room temp? Or should it be served hot from the oven?
Okay, I think that's enough. I appreciate any ham-related wisdom you choose to bestow upon me, and if you have other suggestions for a "main protein" at a cocktail party ... feel free to suggest!
