It's that time of the year again! Hairy crab season for those crab aficionado. I know I know, it's high cholesterol, it's unhealthy but hey, it's one of the best tasting food in the world! What can taste better than a cholesterol/fat laden hairy crab?
Have my second hairy crab meal this season at Victoria Seafood in Hong Kong and unexpectedly, the place is packed even on a Tues night! It must be because of the hairy crab since that is, from what I can tell, what every single table ordered. There is a hairy crab menu and that is what we ordered. For each person, it is 3 crab xiao long bao, crab with shark's fin, two hairy crab, green vegetable, crab on garlic bread, crab with chinese "lin go" and sweet dumpling. The crab xiao long bao at Victoria Seafood are out of this world! I would prefer them to the xiao long bao of Ding Tai Fung in Taipei anyday! They are a bit bigger but looks quite plump with the hairy crab filing inside. Bite into the thin skin and the oil and meat begin to oozes out! Sweet, tasty and steaming hot since they steam it only after you ordered. Definitely my favourite.
Though I am not a big hairy crab fan (unlike some people who can eat 3 or 4 at a time), I enjoyed the shark's fin and the crab on garlic bread too. The crab on garlic bread was especially a nice touch since the crunchy bread adds a nice crunchy texture to the flavourful crab paste. But since this is only my second crab meal this season, I haven't had a chance to compare these dishes with those of other restaurants in HK.
Nonetheless, this is an enjoyable experience and if you happen to be in HK the next few weeks, don't forget to give it a try!
