I went with a group of 8 other Chow hounders to Guan Fu, the new upscale Sichuan in Flushing, which just received an unprecedented 3 stars (for Chinese cuisine) from Pete Wells. It was lunch, so we ordered relatively lightly:
Cold cuttlefish with green chilies
Cold razor clams
Fresh bamboo shoots
Mung bean noodles
Live fish soup with sour vegetables
Live scallops with rice noodles
Corn with duck egg
Gong bao live lobster
Chicken with potatoes
Everything was excellent and the bamboo, the cuttlefish, the fish soup and the scallops (these were very expensive) were extraordinary. In general the freshness and variety of the ingredients, the level of the preparation, and the combination of execution and imagination at the highest culinary level puts Guan Fu on a different level from all other New York Chinese, and probably all North American. This does not at all mean that I will stop going to and loving Little Pepper and Spicy & Tasty (and many others)! It is a different kind of experience, not necessarily more enjoyable, but with amazing variety and freshness.
Prices are high but reasonably so. The room is stunning and the service excellent. GUan Fu will presumably become a zoo after this review. Go now!
