Grotto review - pretty long

Steve C | Jun 16, 200401:22 PM

Haven't seen anything posted about the Grotto, so here goes: We had a 8 pm Saturday night reservation, and got seated straight away...and why not, they were half-full at best. The breadbasket included flatbread and the 1st piece seemed stale, but the 2nd was perfect. Grilled Calamari appetizer was terrific. My wife ordered a Cosmo martini and wasn't thrilled (I thought it was ok). I asked for a tall Tanq & Tonic and got a regular glass...but it was perfectly mixed.
A long wait for the entrees followed and eventually we were told that the peppers had been burnt. Well we had ordered cavatelli with arrabiata and capellini with shrimp with a side of sausage in marinara sauce, so wondered exactly where the burnt peppers came into play. Turns out (some time later) the peppers were in the sausage, which wasn't in a marinara sauce...but still pretty decent. The entrees themselves were short of excellent, but better than merely good. Pricing was a little on the high side ($24 for shrimp over capellini), but hey it's Rush Street (or close to it). Service could have been better (and quicker): we were not told about specials but heard them at other tables. Overall: we'll go back, but not next week.
