I order grilled octopus whenever I see it on a menu.
Seems that a number of restaurants are having consistency issues with their grilled octopus lately. Often, it's been par-boiled too long before it's been grilled, sometimes resulting in a mushy mess.
A couple years ago, Malena was serving the best grilled octopus I had found in the city. I haven't ordered it since last Nov, when the smallish portion that was served was ok, but not nearly as tasty or toothsome as it had been previously. I'll give Malena another try in the near future, since I haven't visited since the newish Chef took over.
The grilled octopus at Volos this week was not nearly as good as it had been when I ate there in December and in January. This week, the octopus was tender in the middle, but the char was soggy with vinaigrette, and almost looked shredded.
My grilled octopus at Mezes last week was better than the octopus at Volos. Not the best I've had on the Danforth, but it seems every restaurant I've visited lately is having trouble with their octopus.
I didn't order the grilled octopus on Chiado's menu when I was there during the winter. Has anyone ordered it recently?
Noticed Joso serves a steamed octopus, dressed in a vinaigrette. I might give up on grilled octopus, and give Joso's version a try. http://www.josos.com/menu.html
If anyone has ordered a good grilled octopus dish in the last month, please let me know where you found it.
