Went to Green Elephant in Portland after seing it mentioned somewhere on this board. It's across from the State Theater on Congress St. It was terrific! Went with several friends on a weekday, and it was hopping by about 6pm. I had the Marsala, which was actually much more like a curry than any marsala dish I had ever had. But it was delicious. Served with rice that had diced carrots that had just the right amount of crunch, giving it a very unusual texture (in a good way!). So much better than the near tasteless, boring rice often served. None of us are vegetarians, but we all found items on menu that we really enjoyed.
Do not miss the dessert - what a surprise. At the recommmendation of our server we ordered a chocolate orange mousse pie -- it was vegan, but absolutely delicious, and much better than non vegan mousse pie I've had elsewhere. It was rich and silky smooth, served with orange slices on skewers dipped in chocolate -- Yummm. Also had some very good organic tea. Only complaint was that we felt a little rushed, server was constantly removing any plate that was empty even though others at the table were still eating. He also checked back so often that it became clear he wanted to turn over the table. That said, we would still return since quality of food was high and prices were reasonable (entrees from about $9 - $14), also they do serve wine (not sure about beer or hard liquor). I would definitely checking to see if they take reservations since there was a line when we left. And thank you to whoever mentioned Green Elephant on this board!
