Good French food is not equivalent to snobby waiters, "fine dining"(whatever that means) atmosphereless surroundings, and cut glass crystal. Pif is representative of what you ACTUALLY find in France most of the time - friendly, small, interesting menu. Check it out, down near Italian market section.
Dmitri's bills itself as Greek which it's really not (no baklava, taramousalata), but it's a marvellous place which is extremely cheap and always full of atmosphere. The waitresses run the place and all seem to be tattooed, and the people doing the cooking, mostly over an open grill, are always Chinese. But somehow it works. No reservations, no credit cards, and BYO.
