The Great Lobster Roll Search

Joel | Aug 22, 200010:16 AM     5

I just got back from the pilgrimage to Machias to the Blueberry Festival and besides having blueberries every conceivable way, I tried many different places for the ultimate Lobster Roll. On the advice of a posting here, I tried the LOG CABIN in East Newport, Maine. It was disappointing at best. They use lettuce as a filler and the bun was a torpedo-style hotdog bun (not toasted). Not a lot of lobster either. Also disappointing was The RED BARN in Milbridge, ME. (Although the blueberry pie was excellent.)
The top 3 places were:
THE CANNERY -Eastport, ME. - Also a torpedo-style hotdog bun but overstuffed with real, fresh lobster. Their chowders were excellent too. Huge portions for the money. This is a great restaurant!
THE LOBSTER POUND - Lincolnville, ME - A more traditional hotdog bun (like a folded piece of bread), toasted with butter and plenty of lobster. It's good but very expensive. $11.95 is a bit much to say the least. It's also good to see that their lobster stew is as good as I remember it to be. Not cheap but really good.
SKIPPERS - Either Saco or Biddeford, ME. - I say this because I was lost in the area and stopped there by chance. It's not near the water and looked like a slim chance at best. I was very surprised and impressed. The roll there was very much like the one at the Lobster Pound but $4 cheaper.

Happy hunting!
