Great food--hip or hole-in-the-wall- for 3 days in SD

We're taking a 3 day trip to San Diego this weekend (Sun-Tues) just before the new baby arrives. We're hoping for some great food.

Romantic ala white tablecloths isn't necessary, although at least one 'hip' place would be fun. We've found the Hounds know food like nobody else!

We love all types of Asian and other ethnic (and have found great Izakaya-style Japanese here in Seattle for satisfying non-sushi cravings). We're not afraid of hole-in-the-walls where you go because of a dish you can get nowhere else.

I think we'll stay downtown, because it seems that there are good food options within walking distance, and easy access for exploring other areas. But if you think I should book another neighborhood for day-time walking around and fun dining--I'm open to suggestions.

Many thanks!
