I stumbled into a mighty fine Mexican joint the other day in Melrose, east of the Taco Belt. It's on 15th & Lake street and it's called Taco Fiesta. There guac was terrific, the chips home made and the Rellenos were sublime...as good as my Mom's! I've been back a few times and everything has been great- especially the Sopes and Gorditas. They also have Carne Seca- a hard to come by, ultra-dried (it's actually salted and sun dried) meat strips made from skirt steak that is great with eggs, with salsa or in soup. When I was a kid we would bring back a few kilos from our annual trip to Mexico or score some from relatives who had made the trip!
The other neat thing about this place was the lunatic who was there two out of the three times I was there, drinking soda, cackling and making all sorts of interesting strange noises in the a back booth. He must have been a relative (I'm thinking crazy uncle)or a harmless vagrant they keep around to liven up the place.
