Great Brunch at Cock-A-Doodle, Oakland

Rod Williams | Dec 4, 2005 02:38 PM

Stopped into Cock-A Doodle for breakfast this morning (719 Washington St., between 7th & 8th Streets, in Old Oakland). They have a full breakfast menu, with an additional page of brunch specials -- we had one of each.

I had the smoked salmon hash with poached eggs and hollandaise -- absolutely terrific. It was a finely-chopped hash of red-skinned potatoes, roasted red peppers and onions, as well as the tasty smoked salmon, topped with just enough of a superb lemony hollandaise, and sprinkled with chopped scallion greens.

My partner had perfectly soft-scrambled eggs with a little cheddar cheese, home fries, a wonderful fresh-baked biscuit with whipped butter and yummy blackberry jam, and some decorative melon chunks.

We both had excellent Illy caffe lattes. The tab came to $28 before tip. Worth every penny -- we'll definitely be back.

We got there around 9:30 and were the only customers until 10:00, when a parade of folks started arriving and filled the place within about 15 minutes. There's also a lovely landscaped courtyard out back where you can eat if you don't mind the chill.
