My husband and I live in Mills River and have been on a continuous quest for a great breakfast. So far, we have found "pretty good", but nothing that blows our socks off. I will admit we have not explored A'ville that much (we have for dinner, but not for breakfast), so perhaps that's where we will need to go.
Our main goal is to find Great Things With Syrup! Egg dishes seem to be much more prevalent on the menus here, but we are REALLY searching for some great pancakes, french toast or waffles (preferably "regular", not Belgian - too dry). I will, however, sometimes have something like an interesting eggs benedict variety, but really prefer the sweet stuff. Oh, and some great hash browns (shredded or diced) would be good too - so many are frozen (and then not cooked enough), have virtually no spice or are, Eeeew! - deep fried!
Does not have to be amazing atmosphere and any price is fine, but are really looking more for a good mom and pop kind of place. No chains, please.
Our problem seems to be that the pancakes, french toast, etc. just seem to be lacking flavor. When we cook The Big Breakfast on weekends at home, I'll make things like Bailey's French Toast or over the holidays, I experimented with Egg Nog French Toast - both really easy and REALLY good. But even my basic seems to taste better than what we get out. Maybe we're just SOL when it comes to breakfast in this area, but we remain hopeful!!
This is what we've tried so far....
Mills River Restaurant - very convenient for us, and very surprisingly, pretty good french toast
Pisgah Inn - pancakes were ok but seemed to need salt or something - great view on a clear day!
Pattycakes - had the oatmeal - I know, not Sweet Stuff - I had to severely doctor it up to make it have some taste - probably should try again and order something else
Dixie Diner - my pancakes were pretty good, my husband had the buffet and didn't like it at all
Fireside Restaurant and Pancake Inn - best french toast I've found - I thought the pancakes had a strong levening taste, which is odd because that's what they're known for! maybe I got a bad batch
Moose Cafe - only ok - good biscuits, but Stuff with Syrup only ok.
Tupelo Honey (A'ville) - very good (interesting versions of dishes) - a bit of a ride for us for breakfast, but probably best overall that we've tried
Season's (Highland Lake Inn) - Sunday buffet - nice atmosphere, interesting buffet, but a bit more exotic (for breakfast) than we're looking for. nice for a special occasion
Kelly's (Brevard and no longer there) - pretty good, but gone now
Jason's (Brevard) - horrible service and just ok food
Others we know about, but haven't tried yet - Crazy Lady, Carolina Diner and I'm sure a multitude in A'ville.
Thanks in advance for any help!
