I was in a fancy restaurant in San Francisco. When the waiter presented the check, he solemnly and pointedly informed us that the check did NOT include a tip. But when I perused the items, a gratuity was added in and was part of the total.
Was I supposed to tip as well? And is there a difference between a tip and a gratuity? I'm not looking for a political discussion of whether tips and/or gratuities are warranted; I would just like to know if there truly is a distinction and if one is truly expected to provide a gratuity AND a tip.
