We went to Grand Szechuan in Bloomington today as part of our Jewish Christmas celebration. A meal in a Chinese restaurant followed by a movie.
I'd been once before, quite a while ago (18 months?), and thought, at the time: Man, I gotta get back to this place that's a 30 minute drive from my house in good traffic and try some more stuff on their menu.
Today, with 3 others, we ordered:
Chengdu Spicy Dumplings -- good, I'd like to eat these again
Szechuan Cool Noodles -- blah, underseasoned
Szechuan Cucubmers (not sure on the exact name, but there's only one cucumber appetizer) -- ok, i guess, not great.
Pea Tips -- too much woody stems mixed in. made it hard to eat. no discernible seasoning
Szechuan Spicy Tofu -- again, underseasoned.
Five Spice Squid -- rubbery, underseasoned, stale fish flavors
Chicken w/Broccoli -- bland, oh so bland, and the broccoli was undercooked
It's not a stellar order, but I didn't get to make all the choices. That said, the only thing I want to eat again is the Chengdu Spicy Dumplings. The rest of it was not particularly enjoyable. I'll be returning to my regular haunt, Tea House at U of MN.
Other folks have reported very good meals at Grand Szechuan in the past. Did we just hit it on a bad day? How's your experience been lately?
