Gowasabi Sushi - 30th Ave. Astoria

We finally have decent sushi in this neighborhood. Gowasabi opened at 34th st. and 30th in Astoria - in the location recently abandoned by that short-lived crepe place whose name escapes me right now. The restaurant is the second in what is conceived as a small chain - the first is in White Plains. With shocking speed they've created a bright and attractive ambiance that had passersby turning their heads or even lining up (the place was packed Thursday evening, their second day of business).

The sushi was great. Not the best I've ever had, but entirely fresh and well presented. Service was haphazard and disorganized - I think because they were overwhelmed with the volume of business and still figuring out how things work - but also extremely friendly.

I'll definitely return.
