Gourmet no lard Tamales at home in OC

Found these tamales at the Irvine at the University Center (on Campus) Farmer's Market (held on every Saturday from 9-12). They had samples of some varieties. They call them "healthy" and "gourmet." I think they are delicious and thought I'd tell.

I bought three (they all come in packages of three) of: (1) Chicken in Red Mole and (2) Sweet corn poblano. But they have some 16 kinds. They use no lard, so a good size tamale is only about 5 grams of fat. Probably can be more depending on the filling, but they say they use extra lean pork and quality imported cheeses. The chicken ones had no cheese and just a little mole (coating the chicken?) And the great taste of the masa that I thikn IS the tamale is there. They ARE a healthy version of tamales, so not the same as original, obviously, but they are very close to it and very tasty. Packed in the corn husks, they reheat quickly and easily. I am so glad to have found them.

They also have a few delicious salsas: fresca, mango, strawberry and something else.

They are in the third row where most of the prepared foods are. 3 for $6, 6 for $10, and $20 a dozen. I think they are called Gourmet Tamales. Not sure. (760) 402-0805. And, they say they deliver, too. Don't know how far they deliver for free as their family farm in in Carlsbad.

Since there is also a Trader Joe's in the same University Center, I went in there and found a bottle of regular enchilada sauce (where the salad dressings are in the far corner) that is quite good, too. I think I'd use different sauces with different variety of tamales.

Though they may not have ALL of these at the Farmer's Market, they make meat filled, vegetarian, vegan, and sweet tamales:

Tinga (spicy chicken with chipotle)
