Gouden Carolus "Grand Cru of the Emperor" and poke - a perfect marriage between Belgium and Hawaii?

bulavinaka | Aug 1, 200810:18 PM

I had a really pissy day - no make that three weeks - at work, and felt I owed myself something special to kick off the weekend. I usually stop by Bristol Farms for a lot of good to great things that I can't find at the local supers or Trader Joe's, and a very respectable selection of Belgians and Belgian-styles are always on hand at my local store. So I passed on the Chimay and even the Alagash Curieux and reached straight for Gouden Carolus' tribute to Charles the Fifth's Birthday - just a solid Belgian ale in my opinion.

Another one of my regular stops at Bristol Farms is their seafood salad counter. They always have a very decent offering of tuna poke and is a very quick and easy dinner when paired with a salad or other raw vegetables, and maybe a baguette and maybe some cheese from their very good cheese counters.

I usually have Gouden Carolus Grand Cru straight up - maybe once in a while with an oatmeal-raisin cookie (go figure - pairs well to me) because I truly enjoy the taste of this ale as it is. But I was in a rush for putting dinner together, and was jones-ing for some poke and didn't have the time or patience for proper wine pairing, but just by chance, the poke and Grand Cru went very well together. In this setting, the Grand Cru took on almost a shoyu-like profile with the poke as well as a sweet-savory component with the cheese (petite basque) and raw veggies I dipped in a romesco-style sauce. I was really wowed by the ability of this seemingly noble Belgian to marry itself so well with these foods. Does anyone like to pair any particular foods with Gouden Carolus Grand Cru with any other foods?
