It was a very good year.... (2007/Hou)

Its time to review and recap. Before launching ChowQuest 2008, what were some of your best finds this past year, places or dishes? (New to you, not necessarily to everyone else).

After a couple of years of same-old, same-old, at the urging of a friend I got out of the rut and had a great Chowish year, trying lots of new things and loving it.

These are knock-your-socks off good:
Himalaya - Pakistani - not sure if I first went here in 07 or 06, but it’s so good it deserves mention 2 years in a row
Gerardo’s Drive In - Carniceria/Taqueria on Patton near Irvington
Burt’s Meat Market - on Lyons near Kress, Cajun, especially boudin and gumbo; greens, chicken-fried pork chop sandwich (sirloin chop, bone-in!) - tasty and wonderfully over-dressed, enough for 2 but not the equal of the pork tenderloin sandwich (chicken-fried) of the Midwest
Jarro Café - conchinita pibil and al pastor tacos, salsas.
New York Bagel Shop - bagels

These are very good, worthy off regular visits, just not as knock-your-socks off as the above:
Café Pita + - Bosnian
Café Rita - Lebanese/Armenian, vegetarian
El Temucano - Chilean, fried conger eel, empanadas
Villa Arcos - super bacon breakfast taco
Louisiana Foods - Crawfish Etouffee excellent, fried chicken (convenience store style) has it’s possibilities, but other items have been disappointing
The Donut Shoppe, Galveston, - Bronco Burrito

On the Texas Sausage and Barbecue Trail (all of these are worthy of revisits):
Gonzales Food Mkt, Gonzales - bbq - I had mutton ribs and sausage, very good
Patek’s, Shiner, Shiner dogs, sausages
Maeker’s, Shiner, sausages, wieners - excellent
Austin’s, Eagle Lake - sausage - excellent
City Market, Schulenberg - sausages, wieners
Besetny’s, Hallettsville and Schulenberg - kolaches, home-made bread
Poffenberger’s (Bellville Meat Market) - Bellville

These have all been visited in the last couple of months and I think are worthy of further visits:
Garcia’s Taqueria y Carniceria on Fondren
Little Bitty Burger Barn on Pinemont, e. of Antoine - sliders
Ostioneria Michoacan, W. Bellfort
Paulie’s
Sparkle’s Hamburger Spot - burger (excellent), fried pork chop sandwich (thick sirloin chop, boneless!, a little tough but very good)
Tortilleria La Reyna, Taqueria y Birrieria - hot fresh tortillas, very good birria (Bissonnet @ Hillcroft)
Taqueria 100% Michoacan - W. Bellfort, e. of 59

There were others, some not quite as remarkable, but this post is already too long! Like I said, I had a very good year.

And a Happy, Chowish New Year to everyone.
