In January I took a little hop over the border up to Mendocino County and the hamlet of Hopland. I stopped at The Golden Pig for a late lunch.
The Reuben made with house-cured pastrami on the menu caught my interest. The pastrami itself was pretty mild, as well as lean and tender. Good quality aged Swiss cheese, sauerkraut and Russian dressing made up for some of the blandness of the pastrami. The Franco-American marble rye ws griddled to a satisfying crispness on first bite yielding to a dense chewiness. Crunchy golden fries wre a bit dry inside as they cool off.
This spot has been on my radar since it opened. There were a surprising number of customers for mid-afternoon on a rainy day. The lady barkeep stayed on top of things remarkably well. Besides the pub and dining area, there's a counter with a separate entrance for grab-and-go picnic items.
