"GOLDEN LION SEAFOOD CHINESE RESTAURANT" - 539 Bur Oak Avenue, Markham

Yes!! Please keep it coming!

Whilst just recently, I was complaining about the successive closing of a number of my favorite Cantonese stirred-fry restaurants around the GTA. In step a few new openings to replenish the depleted landscape. First 'Tasty Delight' and now ' Golden Lion'. They may not be the ideal replacement candidates, but so far, food I have tried was more than half decent!

Last week, I was informed of the existence of this newcomer to the 'Hong Kong style cafe + Wok hay stirred fry' scene. ( looks like this combo theme are becoming popular and being adopted by quite a few places? ).
Located inside the former 'Richmond Court 's Markham branch' with minimal renovation. I was expecting similar type of menu and food being offered. However, I was pleasantly surprise to see they have a pretty varied and expanded menu with the inclusion of some high-end items and dishes - most of which are in the form of flyers posted on the wall. Price point looked pretty fair and reasonable. After talking to the management staff, I was happy to notice they have made a nice move by retaining Richmond Court's former excellent Cantonese Roasted and BBQ meat chef to look after that side of their business! ( IMO, he makes one of the best tasting Cantonese roast duck in the GTA! ).

We ordered a potpourri of noodles, rice and stirred fry dishes. Every one was quite well executed and tasty. Amongst the stand out was the ' Stirred fry Glutinous rice with diced mixed Chinese preserved meats and sausages '. My reference measuring yard stick was the one from the now closed ' Judy's Cuisine '. Golden Lion's version came mighty, mighty close. Though not as refined in presentation, however, taste profile was very similar with just the correct amount of Cilantro added to enhance the aroma and taste! Big thumbs up! The crunchy and savory ' Fried king prawns with salted duck egg yolk ' was priced $13 cheaper than the version I ordered at Yang's last weekend!!.....however, quantity and taste was very similar between the two! 'Filet Mignon cubes prepared Chinese style ' was nicely prepared with the meat caramelized to create an attractive crust topped with a tasty sweet glaze. Complimentary dessert of ' Ginger infused, snow fungus and sweet potato dessert soup ' was a welcoming ' different ' touch!

Overall, the meal was an enjoyable and pleasant one. For sure I'll be back to try out other items on their menu. ( The Petro-Canada station close-by, offering a whopping 12 cents discount after 8.00pm is more than an attractive incentive to head back that way! )
