Godzilla Ramen at Noodle Me, America’s Cup Village, San Francisco

Noodle Me is a pop-up that was born in the kitchen of Dobbs Ferry SF Restaurant. It operates a concession stand at America’s Cup Village on the Marina Green on race days. I had noticed it last month and had a chance to try it on Sunday after the Red Bull Youth America’s Cup Race 2.

Here’s the day’s menu:
(The young girl is chowing on mac&cheese from the next booth, but nonetheless, she’s a good candidate for the next age class of “My Imaginary Well-Dressed Toddler Daughter”, no?)

I ordered the Godzilla ramen, $11, and added a dollop of roasted garlic from the array of creative condiments. The shiro miso stock base was intensely meaty in taste with a pool of fatty richness floating on top. Mildly sweet, assertively salty but not overdone, umami to the max . . . all good. Ample amounts of shredded seven-spice scented roast duck lurked beneath the surface. Skinless, sadly, but the concentration of the delicious soup stock was probably amped up by the sacrifice.

The vegetable toppings: spinach, corn, scallions, and slivers of sweet red onion were all clean tasting and fresh as can be. The bean sprouts were missing, which was OK with me. However, the slices of fish cake were also left off, and that’s a demerit. The other problem was that the noodles seemed to be precooked, since they were too soft and cooler in temperature than the soup stock.

As take-out served in a paper cup, there’s not much opportunity for presentation points. Yet, overall, this tasted great and the combination of ingredients worked well together. A couple from Switzerland who had ordered the same lunch joined me at the picnic table. It was fun to watch the delight on their faces on tasting the first bite. Noodle Me enters the ramen ranking at #42. I look forward to trying more when its restaurant opens.
