A quick post about Gobi. It's on Sunset near Silverlake in the same center where Andiamo once was. I was pleasantly surprised when walking in. The table arrangement was decent, the colors muted and put together well, there was a professional looking arrangement to the place. Watching the construction for the past year or so, it seemed obviously a shoestring restaurant, but the seem to have made the most of it.
The concept is simple, buffet style ingredients in a big bowl cooked by someone manning a giant round iron flattop. The execution is good. The vegetables are all fresh, the noodles had some bite, the meat was fine, for the shaved freeze dried type that is typical at this type of place. There is a good selection of beers, I really liked the French one I had (can't remember the name.) The staffing is minimal, and with the restaurant 3/4 full, the one waiter, one, I presume, owner, and one busboy were at their limit. The waiter did his job very well and nothing went wrong but I think one more table and it would have fallen apart.
There is a kid's portion on the menu for about 1/2 price and a not bad $12 for a dinner portion.
I hope they do well, the food was good and reasonable and the atmosphere is nice.
