Both recommendations from an earlier posting have been tested. And the results are in!
Spicy Bite in the Mission was the first to be hit. Sadly this was a disappointment in that it was a gravy based preparation. The taste was fine but this was not the traditional, desi-chinese version of the dish that obsesses me. Other food there was average and well-priced though rather greasy.
Priya in Berkeley did a more traditional deep and then dry, pan fried version. If you're after this dish, don't get it from the buffet as it loses its crispness. Having tasted the spongy buffet version we asked for an a la carte dish and the spiciness to be upped from mild to light-beading-on-the-brow. Overall verdict - a reasonable preparation, albeit a touch too salty and lacking the addictive tang that comes when they mix it with a little ketchup/Maggi's in India. But the best so far. Let me know if there are any other restaurants out there doing this.
