Remembered a nice meal at Little Giant about 6 months ago, so I suggested it for dinner with friends last night.
Everything from the service to the food was mediocre at best...really a disappointment.
As three friends catching up a little, we didn't immediately look at the menu. Our waiter hovered and made it clear that we were taking too long. The restaurant was not full yet, it was only about 7:30pm. Having worked in restaurants myself, I understand about needing to turn tables but truly we weren't lingering that long. We decided to order mains (no apps.) and some side dishes. I had a cocktail and a quartino of wine, and my friends both had wine as well. After I ordered (first) I was asked if I wanted an appetizer. I declined, and then after everyone had ordered, we were asked again if we didn't want some apps to share. This really got to me. Again, I've lived off my tips, too--but please, it's not as if we'd ordered a salad and a glass of water. We were rushed again to order dessert as there were people waiting for tables at this point.
As far as food, friend's Kobe steak (at $28) was overcooked and average, my lamb flatbread was also overcooked (badly) and the bread itself tasted like chewy flour with no flavor. Other friend's bass with clams was the best of the three. Side of mac n' cheese was just okay, etc, etc. While it's true that the service had probably put me off to start, the food was no where near what I'd consider good enough for this kind of a place at relatively high (esp. for the LES) prices.
Had gelato from Il Laboritorio which was of course wonderful--by that point I didn't trust what the kitchen was going to bring out for dessert.
I really want to like Little Giant, and maybe it was an off night, but I'm not rushing to return. The night before had a delicious steak and fries at nearby Azul Bistro!
