I was thrilled to see Gen sushi open up near me (just a 5 minute bike ride away), got their menu and couldn't wait to order from there. I checked here to see if anyone wrote about it, and I guess I should have taken it as an omen that very few people mentioned it.
They are on Washington and St. Marks.
We got take-out (yeah, I know, take-out sushi is never as good as eating in, but I was comparing their take-out to my other faves) and got all our usual stuff so that we could fairly compare. I usually go to Geido and sometimes to this place on Smith, called Cafe Hana, I think. The prices were in line with these other two, but the food was very disappointing.
The age dashi tofu was bricklike...I think they used firm tofu, and it was just like eating plain tofu to which fried stuff had been applied...it didn't have that kind of molten feel on the inside of the fried outer part. The sauce was forgettable and didn't make up for the brick of tofu.
Their spicy tuna was just a regular tekka maki with a squirt of hot sauce on top...all spice, no flavor, not even the spicy sauce had flavor. The other rolls we got were unremarkable and the sushi was uninteresting..I don't know if it wasn't good quality or wasn't fresh, but it didn't delight like a good piece of fresh sushi at Geido where you don't want to even stop eating it to talk about how good it is.
The seaweed salad only had two kinds of seaweed and was quite small; the seaweed was drenched in dressing so all you tasted was the dressing. We got the japanese chicken wings which were partly burned and tasted awful.
I wish I had something good to say about this place, but I don't. It wasn't horrifically bad, but with other options out there, I will probably never go back. Another 5 minutes on my bike and I'm at Geido!
