Gay-owned restaurants

Hi, just recently moved to New York from San Francisco and really love it here. So many excellent restaurants but where are the ones that cater to gay men and women? I found one women's restaurant in the Village but there has to be more. Tried many in the Chelsea area but the clientele are mostly gay men and, sorry to say, the food is not that good.

My grrlfriend and I eat out about 5-6 times a week and it would be nice to hold her hand across the table without incurring stares from other diners. I've also noticed when a restaurant seats two women, we get lousy tables in 'cyberspace' or near something gross like the bathroom. Once, I overheard a table with two straight couples saying "Look at those two attractive women - eating alone with no date on a Saturday night!" Oh yeah, right! They should be so lucky!

Unfortunately, although gay men and women make up almost 10% of the population, we seem to be invisible in the chowhound world even though we spend tons of money on food. I cannot understand for the life of me why in this large city there aren't more women's restaurants like in San Fran.

Any suggestions for gay or gay-friendly restaurants (majority for women) would be greatly appreciated. I doubt if I'll get many responses but thought I'd try anyway.

BTW, this is a great website.
