On Saturday, I took advantage of the warm weather to hike along the Fox River in Elgin. I stopped in at Gasthaus (15 N. Grove) at the recommendation of Omnivore.

At first, I was less than impressed with the dining room. It had a musty odor like it really needed to be aired out. It was decorated like an old German home with all sorts of various deer racks and other German memorabilia.

I was there at lunch. The menu is somewhat limited. There are the usuals - Wienerschnitzel, sauerbraten, bratwurst, etc along with three or four sandwiches.

The food was very good. I ordered the sauerbraten. The meal started with the standard bread basket and a cup of the soup of the day - french onion. The soup was very good and you could tell that it was made with a rich beef stock. We were also served a cabbage slaw that was a real departure in that it was flavored with dill. It was different but very good.

I had the sauerbraten. It was an eight ouce portion with a rich sauce and a dumpling served on the plate. It was very good although the vinegar in the sauce was a bit strong. My wife had the bratwurst which was a very nice veal sausage that was mildly seasoned.

What was truly amazing was the price- two complete dinners for $11.25 plus tip.

Dinner prices are approximately twice that.

That was a good recommendation.
