Star Market in Salinas promoted Boggiatto Produce's Garden Hearts Iceberg Babies in its weekly flyer. These are a special strain of iceberg lettuce that grows to about the size of a softball. With homemade blue cheese dressing on hand, this sounded a like a good candidate for making a wedge salad.
The Iceberg Hearts were on special for 99¢ apiece. New to me, they've been available to foodservice and restaurants for about 15 years. They've recently been introduced in individual packaging for retail sale.
One Iceberg Heart can serve two people. Crunchy and juicy, the taste seemed a bit sweeter to me than regular iceberg. In this smaller format, the ribs seems less stalk-y.
The head is looser and not as dense as regular iceberg. The color's quite pretty with bright green outer leaves lightening to a pale yellow-green closer to the core. I'd buy these again.
