GalleyGirl's Brownies: now with HEAT!

nooodles | Feb 21, 200512:17 AM

I've been aching to make chipotle brownies for ages now, but wanted to spice up a tried and true brownie recipe instead of downloading some new-fangled chipotle brownie recipe off the web.

After some great posts about GalleyGirl's recipe for super-fudgey brownies, I took the plunge. The link the her recipe is below, so I'll just list what I added.

1 Tablespoon chipotle powder
1 pinch cayenne pepper
1 cup candied ginger, finely chopped

The result was delicious. If you like Dolphin's peppercorn dark chocolate or Vosgues's chipotle dark chocolate, you'll probably like these brownies. There's no initial heat, but there's a warm lingering aftertaste that makes the brownies much more interesting than what's often considered a boring old kiddie dessert.

The candied ginger was a lsat minute addition. I was looking for my chipotle powder and saw the ginger sitting in my drawer. I thought it was worth a try, and it's GREAT. Candied ginger is chewy, so it goes well with the overall chewiness of this very dense brownie. The sugar on the ginger gives a very, very subtle crunch as well. If you don't like ginger cookies, you should probably skip it.

I'm so glad to have participated in the "chili in chocolate" craze!
