Foster-Kedzie: Chap chae/Picaditas

Shasson | Jul 23, 200302:42 PM

Just north of Foster on Kedzie, Lee's Catering (written up twice recently by Monica Eng, including in praise of their labor inducing squid kimchee!) is a Korean catering operation that sells pre-packed items for carry out. I've had their wonderfully mushroomy chap chae ($3 for small, $5 for big), good, but not Great-Sea-good chicken wings (NONE of the heat of Great Seas), and a very pungent kimchee that wasn't to the liking of my palate. They sell many of their other banchan (sp?) items from a refrigerator case.

Just south of Foster on Kedzie, is Los Mogotes de Michoacan #1. They now offer a fantastic picadita for $1.36 including tax. I'm not sure how fresh the "masa boat" is, but their queso fresca, crema and garlicky salsa on top are, well, tops. I'm a big fan of their tortas, too (great bread, great crema).

Soon a new "fine thai and asian cuisine" restaurant will open on Foster just east of Kedzie; it's fancy sign is for a place called "Cafe 99" Perhaps, in time, they'll grow and be called Cafe 999, and move to Argyle....
