Fontinella: Italian or American?

I love a bit of fontinella with a bit of sun-dried tomatoes. When I was looking for this in London in an Italian shop, they didn't know what I was talking about. It got me wondering if this is a Chicago/Mid-West creation. Can anyone clarify this?
