Our roommate brought home last week's City Scene that featured the relatively new family oriented seafood place in Hoover, Fishlips. We went there for lunch last Sunday, and found the place to be packed with the after church crowd. We waited maybe 10 minutes for a table, and then another 10 for the waitress to come for our drink order.

We were a little skeptical about the place based off their online menu. Our roommate, a former chef, took exception to the fact that they added a surcharge of 25 cents to add cheese to a cheeseburger.

We were concerned that they considered hushpuppies to be a side item, and that they weren't either included with the meal, or offered as an appetizer before the meal. A bit odd, at least in my opinion and experience with other seafood places around town.

We had the gumbo, the mahi mahi "burger", and the fried shrimp and oyster basket. The gumbo was mainly tomato based with salad shrimp. Reminded me more of a Manhattan style chowder. Not my choice for gumbo, but I'm spoiled by the old roux based gumbo from Southern Mississippi.

The mahi mahi was cooked well, moist, tender, and well seasoned. The oysters and shrimp were battered in the same combination of what I think was corn flour and seasonings. They weren't greasy, and tasted pretty fresh.

Overall, the food is good for the price range. Service was okay, considering there were three large groups that were seated just before us. There was an issue with the size of the gumbo I'd ordered; I'd asked for a cup, ended up with a bowl. But the waitress was quick to correct the error and made sure we were only charged for the cup size.

This isn't going to be a fancy place you take a date to impress unless your date is rather cost conscious. But they'll probably like the healthy portions, and the quality of the main dishes.

Fishlips is in the same shopping center with Dale's Southern Grill, and Piccadilly in the Hoover/Pelham area on HWY 31. They close at 2 pm on Sunday's, so mind the time on the weekends.
