finally . . . the ribs at pret a porter

wonki | Jun 21, 1999 11:53 PM

after months of saying i was gonna try them, i finally
picked up the phone and ordered in tonight. to start,
let me just say that another couple of months wouldn't
have killed me, and that's the good news.

i was kinda surprised, since i usually agree with eric
asimov's choices (he mentioned pret a porter in the
times a couple months back), but here i have to say i
was in sharp disagreement with his review. perhaps it
was because i got delivery and that sometimes has a bad
effect on the food, or perhaps i just ordered on a bad
night, but the food was simply horrific.

the ribs were terribly disappointing, and when i say
that, i mean both terrible and disappointing. they
basically tasted like someone took some of the red clay
from roland garros and rubbed it on the meat, mixed in
some burnt ashes and chili powder and stuck it in an
oven. they were unbearably dry and not flavorful at
all. i had to force myself to eat more than two.
maybe it's just me, but when i eat ribs, i expect some
type of barbecue sauce on there so i can lick my
fingers after. here the only stuff on my fingers was
burnt black ashes which had only one word going through
my mind: "carcinogen".

the creole rice tasted like it had been cooked in
fantastick or formula 409 or some other heavy duty all
purpose cleaner. it was really nauseating and
inedible. i tried to take a few more bites just to
make sure, but just chukked the whole thing after three
spoons. the black beans were way too salty. the fries
were okay though a bit soggy (probably a result of the
delivery though).

all in all, it was by far the worst meal i have had in
recent memory. i had to re-read asimov's review
just to make sure this was the same place, but
there it was displayed prominently on their menu:
"amazingly good ribs, etc." i really can't explain it,
but unless there are other chowhounds who've been there
and can tell me that tonight was an aberration, i'm
definitely not going to eat there again, and even if i
do, i'm certainly going to steer (no pun intended) far
clear of the ribs.

sorry guys. all i can say is i'm disappointed too.
