had not been to Fells Point in long while so rounded up some fellow chowhounds (eight of us) and trekked from Phoenix< Md to the beltway, to the expressway through town and than and than...Fells Point! every time I've been in search of restaurants, antiques, etc. there always was a sense of arriving on Mars...that recent evening was no different...we all cruised into different parking spots (not an easy thing on a warm spring night)and as I exited my car a tall fellow dressed in white buckskin galloped past me on a beautiful gray horse...no one seemed to notice...but no one ever seems to notice anyting in Fells Point...we headed to Doodas bar/restaurant in Fells Point since forties) for drinks...at our destination I immediately ran into a judge I knew very well, a well known sports announcer on local tv, a prominent back surgeon and at least three hookers along with what appeared to be someone in a straight jacket...this old time bar delivered with right kind of old time oaky atmosphere...beer pretzles in a big glass jar...deliscous beer from I believe Lithuinia or somewhere or something like that....two of my crowd ordered and were served ice cold martinis with just the right vermouth and great onions...the pay phone kept on ringing...same person...looked vaguely like Elton John...kept answering with "can you help me?"...yes good ole Fells Point still delivered...fortified we than short hiked to Kalis Court...had another round of drinks at bar...this time I switched to champagne...drank a tall fluted glass of house champagne...put a few strawberries in...watched the bubbles explode until that got boring and observed the crowd...saw a well known attorney, two more judges, what looked like a mime in full makeup and a disgraced disbarred politician....we were called to our table soon after...all eight of us ordered same creamy and excellent potato soup...just right with a sprinke of chives....I also went for smoked salmon appetizer...served with little circles of toasted whaet bread...a little lemon spritzed on salmon with chopped onions and yes indeed I was ready for entree of crab cakes...perfectly lovely fluffy monsters...broiled....skipped crackers, etc and forked in the crabmeat...its provenance? who knows...certainly not Lithuinia but also not Maryland...no filler no fake just the authenic properly seasoned crab cake...skipped dessert (we all did) drank deeply from snifter B&B straight up...full and pleased with ourselves...strolled out to see a beautiful Baltimore dusky sky...saw and heard an impromptu jazz band outside a bar...they were great...playing some Bird and Monk...nice nice night!
