February 2020 COTM: Voting

MelMM | Jan 17, 202010:00 AM     21

Welcome to the voting for the February, 2020 Cookbook of the Month. We had a robust nomination process, which you can see here:

I'm going to be a little bit unconventional and combine two of our nominees into one selection. The reasons are similar to what L.Nightshade explained in the nomination thread. The books are similar enough that it would likely be a long time, if ever, that we considered the runner-up. Also if they were both separate nominees, they would likely split the vote among people that are interested in exploring that part of the culinary globe. Both had enough nominations to make the voting on their own.

So for our first option, I present our top nominee, with 9 nominations, KACHKA, and SUPRA, which was tied for second with 8 nominations. From our friends at Amazon:

"From bright pickles to pillowy dumplings, ingenious vodka infusions to traditional homestyle dishes, and varied zakuski to satisfying sweets, Kachka the cookbook covers the vivid world of Russian cuisine. More than 100 recipes show how easy it is to eat, drink, and open your heart in Soviet-inspired style, from the celebrated restaurant that is changing how America thinks about Russian food."

"Bordered by Russia, Turkey, Azerbaijan and Armenia, and situated at a crossroads on an ancient East-West trading route, Georgia’s rich and diverse history is nowhere more evident than through its cuisine and legendary hospitality.Central and unique to the culinary tradition of Georgia is the 'supra', a coming together of family and friends to share heart-warming toasts, great conversation, free-flowing drink and, most importantly, dish upon dish of mouth-watering food.In this, her first book, Tiko Tuskadze, chef-owner of London’s celebrated Little Georgia restaurant, opens her kitchen to share her love for the food of her home country and the recipes and stories that have been passed down through her family for generations"

Our second option has made it to voting before. Will this month be the lucky one for VICTUALS? Victuals had 8 nominations this time around, and represents a less well-known culinary region of the U.S.

"Written by Ronni Lundy, regarded as the most engaging authority on the region, Victuals guides us through the surprisingly diverse history--and vibrant present--of food in the Mountain South. Victuals explores the diverse and complex food scene of the Mountain South through recipes, stories, traditions, and innovations. Each chapter explores a specific defining food or tradition of the region--such as salt, beans, corn (and corn liquor). The essays introduce readers to their rich histories and the farmers, curers, hunters, and chefs who define the region's contemporary landscape. Sitting at a diverse intersection of cuisines, Appalachia offers a wide range of ingredients and products that can be transformed using traditional methods and contemporary applications. Through 80 recipes and stories gathered on her travels in the region, Lundy shares dishes that distill the story and flavors of the Mountain South."

To vote, click the heart at the lower right of the posts below. You may only vote for one selection. Please vote with the intention of cooking along and participating in our discussion and reporting threads if your choice is selected. Voting will close at 10am Eastern Standard Time, January 22.
