Asia Kitchen and Market 210-673-0662
Thai & Chinese - Dine-In or ToGo -- I don't recall a buffet, but I've only been for dinner.
1739 SW Loop 410 Suites 201-204
(on the W side of Loop 410 just N of Hwy 90, to the West of the loop)
For Oriental buffet ... for cheap & pretty good (and if you don't like something there's a monstrous selection to switch to) go to:
Mr. Panda 210-545-6109
903 Bitters Rd #310 ... 1 block E of 281
M-F 11-0230 / Sat-Sun 11-03 // Dinner 17-21 // about $8-9/head for the blowout buffet
Bean Sprout 11:00 AM - 9:30 PM
25 NE Loop 410 (210) 525-8868 Just E of 281, this is high quality small, cheap Mom & Pop Chinese buffet & a la carte restaurant in the back of a strip center just N of 410 (near Office Depot), very close to the Lonestar Mall ... in case y'all are doing shopping in the area. Mr Panda isn't much farther away if you need a large selection. (There's a Deli in the same parking lot that's pretty good, too)
For high-end chinese, you can't beat
TAIPEI CHINESE RESTAURANT 2211 NW MILITARY HWY (a few miles N of 410) 210-366-3012 Also owned by the Mencius Group
Formosa Garden: "an atmosphere that is nothing less than spectacular. This restaurant features some of the best Chinese food in San Antonio." 1011 N.E. Loop 410; 828-9988.
Haven't been here ... but have heard nothing but good stuff -- same owners as Taipei which is excellent.
Another of their restaurants is "Aldino Cucina Italiana at Loop 410 in Central Park Mall 210-340-0000 ... it's nouveau Italian cuisine ... have never had a bad meal there. Noisy environment when crowded. No entertainment. Good for a nice night out ... not privately romantic at all ... probably a rotten place to take the kids.
I'd think everyone would like Tom's Ribs up on 13323 Nacogdoches just S of O'Conner. He's on the internet & in the phonebook. Long lines at dinner time ... could well be closed for the holidays. Tom's has franchised out ... so that's the original restaurant. Great ribs, large portions, good hamburgers. Probably one of your best places in the far NE of town. I haven't been to any of his franchises. (210) 654.7427
Little Hipp's downtown for greaseburgers & beer. 1423 McCullough Ave at: E. Evergreen tel: (210) 222-8114
Here's the Beef -- Beef and/or fries make up 80 percent of the menu. These burgers are literally about 10 inches in diameter and resemble a regular hamburger crossbred with a medium pizza.
On the Side -- Side items include the standard fries and HippPuppies (tater tots). According to our waiter, the largest orderinnocently called a "basket" ($6.95)can feed eight really hungry people.
Shypoke Eggs -- A house specialty, these "eggs" are actually bland round nachos made with different colors of processed cheese and topped with ham and tomato.
HOURS: M-F 11-22 PRICES: $1-8
FRATELLI'S CAFFE ITALIANO 8085 CALLAGHAN RD
(210) 349-7997 (210) 342-8221
Good Italian family style & everything is NOT covered in marinara. More like you'd get in Italy. Take I-10 N from 410 & Callaghan is the 1st or 2nd exit on your R ... the place is on the corner of a strip center immediately on your right. Very reasonable prices ... beats the heck out of big chain Italian restaurants. Lots of families go there ... but it's got enough nooks and crannies that if you planned ahead & had a reservation, am sure you could make a good romantic evening of it for cheap.
Haven't tried these, but have always heard great stuff about them - Continental / Gourmet & pricey:
CRUMPET'S RESTAURANTS & BAKERY 821-5454
RESTAURANT BIGA (210) 225.0722 (This chef is the most respected by other chefs in town)
Best prime rib in S.A. is probably at
Old San Francisco Steak House just N of 410 on San Pedro (not 281 at that level) ... they have a chain of 4 places, 1 in DFW, 1 here, don't know about the others. Good for prime rib, for appetizers, they put 10# block of swiss cheese on your table. also not cheap, but worth the money. The place is predictably packed ... dunno if they take reservations.
For a first class place with a great atmosphere (outdoors dining in summer ... inside it looks less inviting) ... you can't beat Grey Moss Inn ... just N of San Antonio 210-695-8301 ... see the phonebook for a map ... or call. They are in a teensy town that is a speed trap ... don't let them stop you after you've had a bottle of wine by yourself. This place has the largest wine cellar in S.A. area. Also marvelously aged beef. A couple can get out of there after a pretty nice evening for about $70 ... w/ Chateaubriand, wine, appetizers, dessert ... but it would be easy to go over that too.
If you measure your Mexican food by good Mole' ... then am told (by Mexican friends ... haven't been there yet) that one must go to Vicky's Cocina / Pompa's Cantina ... same address ... different times of the day ... 547 Culebra (W of downtown) 737-7400
open from 0630-1430 (Cocina) and
1600-20-- M-TH or 1600-2200 F & Sa (Cantina)
For Korean, I go to Wang Goong @ 4429 Walzem (in a strip center next to the Korean Church & Don's & Ben's Liquours ... 590-2600. Have had some very good Korean there ... have also had some so-so food. If you find better ... let me know. But their spicy deep fried whole fish IS SPICY.
Massimo Ristorante Italiano Ran across this by accident -- the only REAL Italians in town --- could be good !

For just beer, try 'Fox & Hound' ... a pub w/ a good selection of beer & liquor, pool tables, ... a definite meat market for the younger crowd. 210-696-1356 12651 Vance Jackson #11
Hills & Dales is an ice house on the NW side of town ... at the Babcock exit on the N side of 1604 ... good selection of beers. Harley night is Wednesdays.
The St Mary's district has all the college crowd bars / clubs ... here's a link to the N St Mary's clubs:
The Riverwalk is the tourist trap area of town ... in case you want to check out stuff on the Riverwalk:
