Recenntly, I went out with 5 of my friends and we wanted to go somewhere after dinner where we could comfortably sit and relax, have a few drinks and talk and actually be able to hear each other.
As we had started in the Pru (dinner at Marche), we were looking at places close by and hit upon the idea of a hotel bar with nice comfy chairs, bowls of snacks and no smoking. One friend thought that the Westin piano bar was long gone, we tried the Marriott bar, which was smoky, crowded and noisy and finally wandered over to the Sheraton, which fit the bill perfectly. Fairly comfortable couches and chairs and an attentive waiter kept us there for a few hours, sipping at overpriced martinis and catching up with each other.
So, where else can we find places with this atmosphere in Boston? We weren't looking for anyplace "sceney", comfort, not coolness was the key factor, background music is nice but not if it interferes with conversation, and no smoking is essential. And we're assuming that high drink prices are part of the deal, but obviously would love to find someplace with more affordable fare.
