Three weeks ago I stumbled upon Fasty's BBQ Joint in Oakdale. I was driving along Hwy 120 on my way to Bloomingcamp Ranch https://www.chowhound.com/post/bloomi... . When that turned out to be a bust, it was a no-brainer to make a u-turn and return to Fasty's for lunch.
I had spotted the Southern Pride and smelled the smoke coming out of this rig on the first drive-by. The owner is from Texas and he smokes with hickory.
The menu board offers several smoked meat options, as well as selling the meats by the pound.. The joint stays open until the time the meats sell out or around 7pm, which can be sooner than expected, so go early. At 1pm, the sausage imported from Texas was already gone, killing my thoughts of the BS (brisket+sausage) sando.
My brisket sandwich, $7.50, was served on a squishy sesame seed bun with crunchy pickle slices and red onions.
I did ask for my sauce on the side. Otherwise, the meat would be tossed with sauce. It tasted tomato-y, like ketchup combined with vinegar and spices. Most importantly, it was not sweet.
Asking for my brisket "fatty", the counter lady said, "you want it moist?" And "moist" it was. A couple slices from where the flat merges with the point and chunks of fatty, moist point cut, adding up to a half-pound of meat. Soft and tender with a beautiful crusty bark and balanced smoke tones, the brisket was delectable on its own, as all good barbecue should be. I did dab on a bit of sauce to change it up. This was such a generous serving, I soon abandoned eating the bread.
Fasty's has a parking lot and covered seating. Note that it only has a port-a-potty. It's a great stop traveling from the Bay Area to the foothills or Yosemite.
