Fantastic Taqueria in Memphis

CatherineC in NYC | May 29, 200212:02 PM

I was home for the barbecue contest 2 weekends ago and had lunch at the Taqueria La Guadelupana on Summer Ave (I am sorry, but I do not remember what the cross street is, but it is a few blocks west of the Lotus Vietnamese restaurant). It was absolutely delicious!

We ordered their guacamole, which was fresh and delicious, although a little on the mild side. My brother and I both had the tamarind juice, which was a really good accompaniment to the food as well. There was a selection of Mexican sodas, but I will have to save those for the next visit.

I had a tripe taco, a taco de lingua and a sopa de pastor, all three of which were really fantastic. The tripe was fried and crispy with a good earthy flavor, and the pork in the sopa de pastor was moist and spicy. The tongue was a bit bland--I wanted to try it, but would not be likely to order it again. All three came with very fresh lettuce, tomato, cilantro, etc. My brother had two tripe tacos, and another friend had the burrito de pastor, which looked delicious, although I was so busy with my plate that I did not try a bite. All of the above were remarkably cheap--I think the three of us got out of there for less than $25 in total.

I had been there before at Christmas and had the cheese enchiladas, which were all right, but nothing compared to those tacos. I can't recommend them enough (and they do have beef and chicken tacos for those who are not tripe fans). In fact, we went straight there from the airport, and the next time I go to Memphis I suspect I will be doing the same!
