Alright. My family finaly visited me in SF. Ten pounds heavyer, and alot smarter here is a summary of our dimsum ventures together:
Lunch 1: After much debate we decided on Yank Sing for our Dim Sum Day: Terrible, unaceptable, and after trying four offerings, we decided mid-meal to walk out!. All of the traditional dumplings tasted like they had been frozen and cooked in a microwave. The Har Gow, and Shui Mai's, and lobster dumplings' consistancy was pasty, and their flavor was, well... pasty. THe peking duck was cold, limp, and tastless without hoisen sauce. Still hungry, but very angry, we decided to leave the car in the garage and walk to Harbor Village: All together much better, with firm textured, meaty tasting offerings. The perfect amount of fat moistened the fine texture of the meaty Shui Mai. The filling of a spinach and shrimp dumpling was as creamy as mascorpone cheese. All was a bit cold, but none-the-less exponentialy better then the even more expensive Yank Sing rival. Don't get me wrong though: Harbor Village is not special; it is acceptable. And they charged us 15 dollars for a small Wonton soup; we decided to give up on any SF dimsum that had their own brand name chop sticks.
Dim Sum try 3# The next day we decided to look for a teahouse without a single review. We went to Yet Wah on Clement and twenty something and had better dimsum for less than half the price. The shui Mai were pleasently firm, with an extremelly coarse shrimp and pork filling. The Har Gow not only contained whole shrimp, but Jumbo fluffy type shrimp. Very good but their taste did not linger the way I like it too. Their potstickers were tasteier than U-lee( though smaller) and contained more ginger then pork.
I am not an iconoclast: the dim sum (on the day i went) was better at a random cantonese place than either dimsum megalith.
