I just listened to bbc news announcing that most chocolate shops in london will be switching to fair trade chocolate, which is cocoa originating from ghana, not the ivory coast where much of the world's cocoa now comes. what does this mean?
ivory coast cocoa is cheap, but not ethical because of the way most farms produce it, by not paying workers a fair wage, use of slave and child labor, and the destruction of forestland to farm cocoa. Ghanese cocoa is produced by small independently owned farmers who do not use environmentally destructive farming methods.
Now let's hope Americans will demand better.
