I found an old post about this, but wanted to see if anyone has had success with breaking up blocks of shrimp more recently without actually thawing the shrimp.
(And if you're wondering, this was a foolish mistake...I was in a hurry at the fish market and didn't realize I was buying a solid block of shrimp until the guy handed it to me after paying and then I was too embarrassed to try to "return" my shrimp. I figured--I'm resourceful, I can figure this out...but now these shrimp are stressing me out!)
My plan is to run some cold water over the block to thaw some of the excess ice, then throw it on the floor and try to break up the block. Then, I'd like to let about 2.5 lbs. worth thaw in the fridge.
So, when would you plan to try to break this up for Saturday evening dinner? I'd like to clean and shell the shrimp on Saturday morning, so I was thinking to shoot to get them into the refrigerator on Thursday. I normally just let shrimp thaw overnight, but obviously anticipate a longer thaw time b/c they are block frozen.
Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks!
