New Rochelle continues to amaze me. Rather than being a suburban culinary backwater, it keeps tossing up amazing little restaurants.
Specifically, the newest Southern restaurant in New Ro, Helen's Promises. Built on the corpse of two other Southern restaurants, and two pizza restaurants (and that's just in the 6 years I've lives here), this one is a definite keeper.
I've had two meals there this weekend (so small sample size issues still apply), but both were really excellent (and for those who care, ridiculously cheap).
Sharing lunch plates with my parents, I've tried an excellent fried catfish twice, and good ham and turkey dishes. Collards were wonderful, as was potato salad, string beans. Mac & Cheese was damned good the first time, but only so-so the second time. Mashed potatoes were far too rich for my tastes, but my parents really liked them.
Here's the kicker - $5.15 for a large sampling of the main & 2 sides at lunchtime.
Service was friendly and extremely polite (I've heard second-hand - these were both takeout meals picked up by my folks).
The two caveats: it's only two weeks old, so things may slide rapidly at any point, and the hours are very odd.
