There are many who post on the Chowhound boards who are experts on barbecue of all sorts from all geographic locations. While I would not classify myself as such, I love barbecue and I know when something tastes good. And that is the case with the 'cue being served at Atlantic BBQ in Belmar. Joe is the owner, and he told us that he's been there for about 5 years. That being the case, his place has to be the best kept secret in this area because I've been living in south central NJ for a long time, and I just recently heard about it. My husband and I went there for the first time yesterday. The place is small and has zero ambiance -- just a counter in front and a few booths in the back.
We shared a full rack of babybacks which were truly outstanding -- about dozen large-sized, very meaty ribs. They are prepared with a dry rub and hickory smoked. The homemade barbecue sauce was terrific. Also homemade and tasty were the baked beans and coleslaw, though if you like a lot of mayo in your slaw, this is not the slaw for you. Fried Vidalia onion rings, though not homemade, turned out to be crispy, greaseless and delicious.
There are lots of other items on the menu which is posted on Joe's web site.
