The Evolution of Pizza

Turner Movie Classics showed Vittorio de Sica's Oro di Napoli (1954), which has a long segment about a pizza seller in Naples. His pizzas are deep-fried, and do not appear to have any toppings at all.

So, how did we get from this simple fry bread to the cheese-loaded delicacy we know today?
