Europane Bakery review after Chowhound advice

Sarahpet | Oct 5, 200407:53 PM

Well, I heroically volunteered to pick up a selection of pastries at Europane today for an office birthday, and was able to test the advice my fellow hounds gave me yesterday about the best food there. And, of course, the answer is that it is all good. Reviews from best to only slightly not so perfect but still acres beyond other shops:

Lemon bars- the best. Sweet but not so much your mouth is exploding, heavy, luscious.
Blueberry brioche - light, with a delectable cheese of sorts tucked underneath. These went the quickest.
Personal sized apple pie - a beautiful dessert. About 3" round, with a lattice top. Perfectly flaky (maybe lardy?) crust, spiced apples inside. I needed to nuke it for about 10 seconds and add ice cream
Pear tart - light, flaky crust- lighter than the pie crust. I actually found the filling too sugary, though. Still wonderful.
Chocolate tart (?) - dense fudgelike chocolate in a tartlike pastry shell. Good, but the fudge was very thick.

Total for all of the above (2 lemon bars, 2 brioches, 2 pear tarts, one apple pie and one chocolate tart, plus a lovely buttery croissant to sinfully eat on the way into work, wiping the butter off my chin onto my briefcase) was $28. So much better than the awful stale Mrs. Beasley cakes in the 7th and Figueroa food court available for the same price.

Thanks for all the advice! Good stuff.
