How is the ethnic food scene in Portland?

Kelly Plinkowicz | Oct 25, 200112:09 PM     3

I'm looking forward to some superior beers and coffees (and produce, and trees, and smiles, and bookstores) when I move from New York to Portland sometime next year.

Here in the boroughs of New York, some of the most diverse places on Earth, I eat a lot of ethnic food. Everything from Taiwanese food to Peruvian food to Irish pub grub and Bosnian snacks are available here.

My question to the Portland community is thus:

Would I be able to find small, unassuming ethnic restaurants and take out joints patronized mostly by immigrants or 2nd generation Americans? I know there are Ethiopian restaurants in Portland, but are there Indian restaurants? Any non-Anglicized Chinese food? Real middle-eastern restaurants with thick hummus and smoky babaganoush? Are the Mexican restaurants in Oregon City the real deal?

I know the ethnic food scene won't be as diverse as in New York, or the Bay Area, or even Atlanta, Georgia, but I'm hoping I'd at least find some gems to satisfy my urges.

Would that be the case?

-Kelly
